You can make a routine appointment with the doctor of your choice if he/she is available.  Appointments are made in person, by telephoning the Surgery. You can also book online, once you have registered via patient services, https://www.patient-services.co.uk/login . 

The reception staff will ask the nature of the appointment when booking - this helps them to assess whether you need a single/double appointment and will enable them to give you an appointment with the most appropriate medical staff able to help with your needs.

Every day we run a session for those patients who need an emergency appointment.  The receptionist will ask you the nature of the problem and you will be given the next available appointment on that day with the Minor Illness Nurse.  The Nurse Practitioner can make an appointment with the duty doctor on the same day should your medical condition require it. Please be aware that our phone line options have changed, please see below for theses changes.

Test results can be requested between the hours of 10am and 3pm

Prescription enquires are between the hours of 1pm and 6pm

Referrals or insurance reports enquires are between 9.30am and 16.00pm

If you require a “Special” appointment these can also be booked in advance (e.g. antenatal, coil removal, contraception inplant insertion and or removal, minor surgical procedure, insurance medical examination with a Doctor or asthma or COPD check, diabetes check, appointment for contraceptive pill with our Minor Illness Nurse etc). Please inform the receptionist what the appointment is for so that you can be given a suitable appointment.

If you are unable to keep an appointment please let us know as soon as you can – this will enable another patient to be seen. 

Please only discuss a maximum of ONE problem per appointment. Should you require a longer appointment for multiple issues, please advise the receptionist when booking who can book a double appointment for you.

As you might appreciate this creates problems within the appointment system and can waste Doctors’ valuable time.  If you are delayed please telephone the Surgery wherever possible and we will inform you if the doctor is still able to see you.  However, if you arrive late (more than 5 minutes) without notifying us, you will not be seen and will be asked to rebook your appointment.

Many problems can be discussed over the telephone. If you wish to speak to a Doctor please ask the receptionist for a telephone consultation. Unfortunately we cannot give a specific time for the Doctor returning your call, but it will be on the day you request the consultation.

You can also ask for a specific telephone consultation  time if you wish to phone to speak to a doctor at a specific time. You would be given the available time slots by the receptionist when you enquire.

East Northants Hub is a new GP led evening and weekend service where local GPs and other clinicians offer a range of services for patients registered with a GP practice in East Northants. Please visit the Hub Website for more information.

We also offer extra appointments on behalf of the surgery on a Monday and a Wednesday with our health care assistant, operating from Harborough Fields Surgery. This is 18:30 – 20:00, should you wish to make an appointment please speak with our reception.

Try and come to the Surgery whenever possible as the facilities are far better for examination and treatment. This includes children with a temperature or rash.

If you genuinely require a Doctor to visit you at home, please telephone the Surgery before 10.30am. Please be ready to give the patient’s name, address, telephone number and a brief description of the complaint. This will enable the Doctors to prioritise the visit appropriately.

Please remember that several patients can be seen in the practice in the time that it takes to make one home visit.

It is important that you inform the reception staff if you are unable to attend your appointment, this will allow that appointment to be offered to another patient. If you fail to notify the Practice that you are unable to attend, you will be sent a letter informing you that you have defaulted from your appointment. Persistent defaulters maybe removed from the list.

You can also complete our appointment cancellation notification request form. This can only be used if your appointment has been arranged for more than 24 hours in advance. (excluding weekends and public holidays). You can also text to cancel your appointment.

We have a texting service which allows you to receive confirmation and reminders about your appointments.

To have this service you will need to register by completing a consent form.

Higham Ferrers Surgery obtained training practice status on the 1st August 2011 something we are very proud of. This means qualified Doctors spend periods of between 4 months and a year with the practice and take part in surgeries and home visits. These GP Registrars are fully qualified and work in the surgery to gain experience in General Practice.

Occasionally these GP's may wish to video their consultations for training purposes only. The recording will only be seen by the GP and their tutor (Dr Onimole) and once viewed it will be erased. Your permission is needed in order for the doctor to video the consultation and you will be asked to sign a consent form to say that you agree to the recording. If you do not want to be recorded while your consultation is taking place then you do not have to.
